J R R Tolkien was a writer, scholar and philologist. He is best known as the author of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. Together with being an internationally renowned fantasy writer he also served as Professor of Old English at Oxford University, England. Having sold more than 100 million copies, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the best-selling fiction book of all time. The trilogy, together with other writings by Tolkien, has been adapted into award-winning films

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State, South Africa on January 3rd 1892. His father, who was a banker, died when Tolkien was just four years old. Tolkien’s mother then took him and his younger brother to live in England near the city of Birmingham. Tolkien’s mother died in 1904. She assigned the guardianship of her sons to Fr. Francis Xavier Morgan, a close friend who helped rear and educate the boys.

Following second level education Tolkien studied linguistics Exeter College, Oxford and was awarded an honours BA Degree in 1915. He served in France during World War I. He was released from duty due to illness and returned to England in November 1916. After the war Tolkien was employed for a time at the Oxford English Dictionary before becoming Associate Professor of English Language at Leeds University in 1920. He was appointed to the post of Professor of Old English at Oxford a few year later. Tolkien’s friend and colleague, author C S Lewis from Belfast, also worked in the English department of Oxford University. They were both members a literary group known as the ‘Inklings’.

In 1949 Tolkien was appointed external examiner at the English Department at University College Galway. He held the post until the mid-fifties and frequently visited the Burren district in Co Clare. The Burren, a karst landscape, is unusual and among the many features of this district is a cave called Poll na Gollum. It is generally accepted that the landscape of the Burren had an influence on some of the writings of Tolkien.

J R R Tolkien died aged 81 at his home in Bournemouth, England in the year 1973 On This Day.

21 August-Sergey Brin Google Co-founder

Sergey Brin co-founded Google with Larry Page when they were both Ph.D. students at Stanford University in California. Google originated from the word googol which is the number one followed by a hundred zeros. It is a technology company which specialises in services related to the internet.

Sergey Brin was born in Moscow in what was then the Soviet Union. In 1979, when he was six years old, his family moved to the United States where his father taught mathematics at the University of Maryland. His mother worked for NASA.

When he had completed his second level education in 1990 Sergey Brin enrolled at the University of Maryland. He studied computer science and mathematics and graduated with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in May 1993. Following graduation he enrolled at Stanford University where he was awarded an MSc in 1995.

While studying for his PhD, Brin met Larry Page who was also a PhD student at Stanford. They became friendly and together they created a search engine as part of a research project. After some time the search engine was connected to the Stanford University broadband. It became popular and eventually had over 10,000 searches per day.

Brin and Page established their new company, Google, in 1998. It is now the most popular search engine in the world and receives millions of search requests per day. Google is a multinational company employing thousands of people in forty countries around the world. It has around 5,000 employees at its European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.

As Google has developed its founders have becomes billionaires. According to Forbes Brin is the 20th richest person in the world. Brin and Page announced in August 2015 that Google was being restructured under a new parent company called Alphabet. Brin, who is the recipient of several awards was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in the United States in 2009.

Sydney Opera House, which is a wold famous centre for the performing arts, is located in the harbour district of the city of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is comprised of several performance venues which host over 1,500 performances annually which are attended by over one million people. Sydney Opera House has become a symbol of both Sydney and modern Australia.

In 1955 the Premier of New South Wales, Joseph Cahill, launched an international competition to design an opera house which would have two performance halls. The competition, which attracted 233 entries from 32 countries, was won by Danish architect Jørn Utzon in 1957. Construction of Sydney Opera House began in March 1959 and took fourteen years to complete. It took almost ten years longer than expected and the eventual cost was $102 million.

Sydney Opera House has almost 1,000 rooms. The largest of these is the Concert Hall which has an audience capacity of up to 2679. Other rooms such as the Joan Sutherland Theatre, the Drama Theatre, the Playhouse and the Studio give the Opera House an overall seating capacity of 5,738. It is regarded as one of the most spectacular centres in the world for the performing arts. Apart from its function as an opera house it is also the number one tourist attraction in Australia. Over seven million people visit the Opera House each year and over a million of these attend a performance.

Sydney Opera House was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2007. According to the expert evaluation report, ‘Sydney Opera House is a great architectural work of the 20th century. It represents multiple strands of creativity, both in architectural form and structural design, a great urban sculpture carefully set in a remarkable waterscape and a world famous iconic building’.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 was the first performance given at the official opening of Sydney Opera House. The opening, which was televised, was accompanied by a fireworks display.

Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II of England in the year 1973 On This Day.

The world famous Sydney Opera House was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2007. Danish architect Jørn Utzon won an international competition to design the building in 1957 and the building work began in 1958. Fifteen years later Sydney Opera House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II of England in the year 1973 On This Day
