15 September-Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone is an award winning film director and screenwriter who is a native of the United States. He is best known as the director of hit films such as, ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ and ‘Natural Born Killers’. He was the screenwriter for film ‘Scarface’.

William Oliver Stone was born in New York City in 1946. He was educated locally and entered Yale University in 1964. He dropped out and served in the Vietnam War. After the war, Stone attended New York University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film in 1971.

In 1979 Oliver Stone won an Academy Award for his film ‘Midnight Express’. Since then he has won Academy Awards for ‘Platoon’ and ‘Born on the Fourth of July’. He has been nominated for Academy Awards on eight other occasions.

19 August-Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States of America. He served for two terms from 1993 to 2001. A lawyer by profession, Clinton served as Governor of the State of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and from 1983 to 1992. At the end of his terms, Clinton left office with the highest approval rating of any U.S. president since World War II.

Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe in 1946. At the age of 15 he changed his name to Clinton, the name of his stepfather. Bill Clinton graduated from Georgetown University in 1968 and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the Oxford University, England. He later attended Yale Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1973. While studying at Yale he met his future wife Hilary Rodham.

During his time at college Clinton became involved in politics. With Hilary he campaigned for the Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale during the summer of 1972. He returned to Arkansas where he served Governor before being elected president of the United States in 1992. He served for two terms and has been involved in humanitarian work since leaving office.

Donald Trump is President of the United States of America. Before becoming President he was a businessman, a well-known real estate developer and television personality. He was also a politician and author. As nominee of the Republican Party Trump was elected President of the United States in the 2016 election.

Donald John Trump was born in the New York City borough of Queens in 1946. His father was of German descent and his mother was an immigrant from Scotland. Trump’s father was a successful real estate developer in New York. Donald Trump left school at the age of 13 due to behavioural difficulties. His parents enrolled him in the New York Military Academy from where he graduated successfully in 1964. He then entered Fordham University in The Bronx, New York. After two years at Fordham he transferred to University of Pennsylvania, from where he graduated with degree in economics in 1968.

During his college years Trump worked in his father’s business and following graduation he joined the company. In 1971 he was given control of the family business and named it the Trump Organisation. The Organisation has since become involved in major construction operations including housing developments in New York. The Trump Organisation has also built several casinos, hotels and golf courses.

In 1995 Donald Trump founded the gaming and hospitality company Trump Entertainment Resorts. He became executive producer and presenter of the reality show ‘The Apprentice’ in 2003. The show was very successful and Trump later co-produced the successful ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’. Forbes has listed Trump among the world’s wealthiest billionaires.

22 May-George Best

George Best was a professional footballer who was a native of Belfast Northern Ireland. He began his professional career with Manchester United and stayed with the club for eleven years. Best also played international football with Northern Ireland. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1968.

George Best was born in Belfast in May 1946. He joined Manchester United as a youth at the age of 15 having been spotted by the club’s scout Bob Bishop. Bishop told the club’s manager, Matt Busby: ‘I think I’ve found a genius’. Two years later, in September 1963, Best began his senior career with Manchester United.

During the following 11 years George Best made 470 appearances for Manchester United. He scored 179 goals for the club. Best left Manchester United in 1974. He played for several other clubs in various locations around the world until his retirement in 1983. He made 37 international appearances for Northern Ireland. He died at the age of 59 on November 25th 2005.

Dolly Parton, singer, songwriter and musician is a native of the USA. She has become one of the best known women in country and pop music. Regarded as a cultural icon she is a successful author and businesswoman. She is also involved in several philanthropic activities. Parton, who began performing at the age of ten, has composed thousands of songs and has released more number 1 hits than any other country singer.

One of a family of twelve Dolly Rebecca Parton was born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee in 1946. She moved to Nashville when she finished high school in 1964 to pursue a music career. When Porter Wagoner introduced her on his television show her career began to take off. With Wagoner, Parton recorded several country hit songs and together they became a performing duo during the late sixties and early seventies.

Dolly Parton was awarded the female vocalist Country Music Award in both 1975 and 1976. ‘Here You Come Again’ reached the top of both the county and pop charts in 1977. The event marked her move into the area of popular music. Parton starred in many films including ‘9 to 5’ (the title song for which earned her an Oscar nomination), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias and Joyful Noise.

Composer of over 3,000 songs Dolly Parton was inducted into the Country Musical Hall of Fame in 1999. She has been given a litany of honours during her lifetime including eight Grammy Awards. Dolly Parton has been married to Carl Dean since 1966. She is godmother to singer, songwriter, and actress Miley Cyrus.
