Bono is an Irish singer-songwriter and musician who is the frontman of the Irish rock band U2. He is also a businessman who is well known for his involvement in global charity activities. Bono was a founding member of U2.
Bono was born Paul David Hewson in Dublin in 1960. He grew up in Finglas on the north side of Dublin city. He was educated at Glasnevin National School and at Mount Temple Comprehensive School.
Interested in music from a young age Hewson responded to a notice in Mount Temple looking for musicians to form a band. The band, which came to be called U2, eventually consisted of four members: Paul ‘Bono’ Hewson, Dave ‘The Edge’ Evans, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen who had posted the notice.
Bono, who at first sang and played the guitar, eventually becoming lead singer. He also wrote the songs for the band. With Bono as the lead singer the band became a top international act and to date have released thirteen studio albums. They have sold over 150 million records worldwide and are ranked one on the best-selling bands in the world. Bono continues to write almost of U2’s songs which often have social, religious and political themes. Apart from his work with U2 Bono has recorded with numerous other artists.
With U2 Bono has won 22 Grammy awards and a Golden Globe award. He was named ‘Person of the Year’ by Time magazine in 2005 and was awarded an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 2007. U2 has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bono and his wife Ali have four children.
