Felipe Contepomi, an Argentine Rugby Union footballer was registered with Co Carlow Football Club, Ireland while playing at Leinster. Having joined Bristol from Club Newman in Buenos Aires in 2001 he moved to Leinster in 2003. He played his first game for Carlow against Shannon on January 18th 2004. Contepomi remained with Leinster until 2009 and played a major role in the club’s European success. He qualified as doctor in May 2007 having studied at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland whilst playing for Leinster.
Felipe Contepomi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1977. He was educated at Colegio Cardenal Newman in Buenos Aires and played Rugby with Club Nemman in the city. Colegio Cardenal Newman was established in March 1948 by Brother Joseph Ignatius Doorley a member of the Irish Christian Brothers. Brother Doorley was born in Carlow, Ireland in 1878. Before moving to Argentina, he had established several schools in the United States, including Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
Following his time with Leinster Contepomi played for Toulon and Stade Francais before returning to Club Newman in 2013. Contepomi was a key player with the Argentine National (Los Pumas) team from 1998 to 2013. He was capped on 87 occasions. Playing at fly-half he scored 651 points during his international career. Following his retirement Contepomi was appointed coach of the Argentine National team in 2015.
