Sergey Brin co-founded Google with Larry Page when they were both Ph.D. students at Stanford University in California. Google originated from the word googol which is the number one followed by a hundred zeros. It is a technology company which specialises in services related to the internet.
Sergey Brin was born in Moscow in what was then the Soviet Union. In 1979, when he was six years old, his family moved to the United States where his father taught mathematics at the University of Maryland. His mother worked for NASA.
When he had completed his second level education in 1990 Sergey Brin enrolled at the University of Maryland. He studied computer science and mathematics and graduated with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in May 1993. Following graduation he enrolled at Stanford University where he was awarded an MSc in 1995.
While studying for his PhD, Brin met Larry Page who was also a PhD student at Stanford. They became friendly and together they created a search engine as part of a research project. After some time the search engine was connected to the Stanford University broadband. It became popular and eventually had over 10,000 searches per day.
Brin and Page established their new company, Google, in 1998. It is now the most popular search engine in the world and receives millions of search requests per day. Google is a multinational company employing thousands of people in forty countries around the world. It has around 5,000 employees at its European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
As Google has developed its founders have becomes billionaires. According to Forbes Brin is the 20th richest person in the world. Brin and Page announced in August 2015 that Google was being restructured under a new parent company called Alphabet. Brin, who is the recipient of several awards was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in the United States in 2009.
