Nick Vincent Murphy is a novelist and screenwriter who is a native of Kilkenny Ireland. He is best known for the feature film Hideaways and the award winning comedy series MOONE BOY which he co-wrote with Roscommon born actor Chris O’Dowd.
Nick Vincent Murphy was born in Kilkenny in 1977. He was educated at Kilkenny College in Kilkenny City and at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) where he was active in the drama society. He graduated from TCD with a BA degree in English and History in 2000. In 2001 he graduated with an MA in Film Production from The Dublin Institute of Technology.
Following graduation Murphy worked as a writer and editor of shows such as The Offside Show and The Running Mate for television stations TV3 and TG4 in Dublin. Hideaways, his first feature film, was produced in 2011. Described as a ‘fable about learning to live with the curses and blessings we inherit’ it had its premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan, New York.
With Chris O’Dowd, Nick Vincent Murphy wrote a short film called ‘Capturing Santa’ for Sky 1. The film won the Grand Prize Short Film award at the 2012 New York International Children’s Film Festival. The short film, which was based on an incident in O’Dowd’s childhood was developed by Murphy and O’Dowd into the comedy series MOONE BOY.
MOONE BOY has been so successful that it has run for three series. It was the winner of an Emmy award in New York in 2013 for Best Comedy and an Irish Film and Television Award (IFTA) in 2014. It also won British Comedy Award for Best Sitcom in 2014.
THE AVIARY, a three-part miniseries adaptation of the novel ‘The Salesman’ by Joseph O’Connor and RIGHT AS RAIN a 6-part comedy series are in development by Murphy. He currently lives with his family in the United States.
