Cahirmee Horse Fair is held each year in the town of Buttevant, Co Cork, Ireland. The ancient fair attracts thousands of visitors. Horses are bought and sold, and it is reported that large amounts of cash changes hands. The fair is considered to be one of the oldest horse fairs in Europe.
The origin of the Cahirmee Horse Fair is uncertain but it is referred to in documents dating from the reign of Charles II (1630-1685), king of England, Scotland and Ireland. It is reported that Napoleon’s horse ‘Marengo’ and ‘Copenhagen’, the horse the Duke of Wellington rode at Waterloo were both bought at Cahirmee Fair. The fair was held at the Fair Field of Cahirmee until 1921. In that year it moved to the nearby town of Buttevant.
