Tommy Makem was a native of Co Armagh, Northern Ireland. He was a folk singer and musician who was sometimes referred to as the Bard of Armagh. As a member of the folk group, ‘The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem’ he sang and played various instruments, including the banjo, the tin whistle and the bagpipes.
Tommy was born in Keady, County Armagh on November 4th 1932. In 1955 he emigrated to the United States where he formed an Irish folk music group with the Clancy Brothers. The group was hugely successful, playing at various venues across America and appearing on prime time television shows. Makem also pursued a successful solo career.
Tommy Makem died at the age of 74 in the year 2007 On This Day.
