01 February-Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary was first published in 1884. Dublin native Richard Chenevix Trench was one of its co-creators. The other two, Herbert Coleridge, and Frederick Furnivall were British. Trench served as Bishop of Dublin from 1864 to 1884.

The Oxford English Dictionary is regarded as the authority and the main historical dictionary on the English language. The second edition was published in 1989. It provides the reader with the meaning history and pronunciation of 600,000 words. Work on the third edition of the Dictionary is currently underway.

The Oxford English Dictionary was published first published in the year 1884 On This Day.
