17 August-Richard Lalor Sheil

Richard Lalor Sheil was born near Slieverue County Kilkenny. As a child his family moved to Bellevue near Waterford. He graduated in law from Trinity College Dublin and was the author of several plays. He became active in politics and was one of the leading supporters of Daniel O Connell in the struggle for Catholic Emancipation which was achieved in 1829. He became the first Catholic Privy Councillor. He served as MP in the British parliament for Louth, Tipperary and Dungarvan. Richard Lalor Sheil was born in 1791 On This Day
