Abortion is the termination of pregnancy. It can occur spontaneously or be induced. Induced abortion is usually referred to as abortion. It is estimated the over 50 million abortions are performed annually around the world and almost half of those are performed in an unsafe manner.

References to abortions being performed date back to ancient civilisations in various parts of the world. The procedure involved the use of abortifacient herbs and a range of implements and techniques. During the 19^th century countries began to introduce laws banning abortions

Though abortion was technically legalised in the USSR in 1919, doctors were under instruction to discourage the procedure. The legislation was changed in 1936 to introduce a more restrictive regime. In 1935 Iceland became the first country to legalise abortion. Several other countries subsequently introduced similar legislation. However, in some countries abortion is still illegal.

Elvis Presley, musician and actor, is often referred to as The King of Rock and Roll. He was a native of Mississippi, USA. He was of Irish (Co Carlow), Scottish, Cherokee and German ancestry. From humble beginnings Elvis Presley became one of the biggest names in Rock and Roll. Though he died at the age of 42 on August 16^th 1977, he remains one of the most popular music icons in the world.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, USA in 1935. He was educated locally and was given his first guitar at the age of 10. When he was thirteen years old his family moved to Memphis Tennessee where he graduated from High School in 1953. Elvis made his first recording at the age of 19 in 1954 but his first number 1 hit in the US was with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ in 1956.

During the following years his recordings and television appearances made Presley enormously popular. With 18 number 1 singles and sales estimated at one billion records, he is the best-selling solo performer in the history of recorded music. He won three Grammy Awards during his lifetime and was one of the first performers to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967. They had one daughter, Lisa Marie, who was born in 1968.
