07 October-Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin is President of the Russian Federation. Having served as President for two terms from 2000 to 2008 he was not allowed to seek re-election due to term limits. However he was appointed as Prime Minister by his successor, Dmitry Medvedev. Putin was again elected president of the Russian Federation in 2012.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad) in 1952. He studied law at the Saint Petersburg State University. Following graduation in 1975 Putin joined the KGB, the main security agency for the Soviet Union. In 1991 Putin retired from the KGB and joined the administration of Boris Yeltsin.

When Yeltsin resigned in 1999 he appointed Putin as acting President. Putin was elected President in the subsequent 2000 Presidential Election. During his career he has enjoyed high domestic approval ratings. On May 7th 2012 he was elected President for a six year term obtaining 64% of the vote.
