Linux is a computer operating system. It is the leading operating system on servers, mainframe and supercomputers. Though only used on minority of desktop computers, it is used in a vast array of other devices including smartphones and tablet computers. The Linux kernel was first developed by Linus Torvalds, a computer science student. Torvalds developed the software while attending the University of Helsinki.
Linus Benedict Torvalds was born in Helsinki Finland on December 28th 1969. He graduated from the University of Helsinki with a master’s degree in computer science in 1996. During his time at university Torvalds released Linux kernel on October 5th 1991. He is the winner of several awards and continues to direct the development of Linux
