David is a marble statue of a standing male nude. It is located in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy. The statue was created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. It depicts the biblical hero David with a slingshot over his shoulder and is 5.16m (almost 17 feet) tall.

Originally David was commissioned for the Cathedral of Florence. It was to be placed with other statues in the Cathedral 80m above the ground. However it was decided by a committee of the city council to place the statue in the Piazza della Signoria outside the civic government offices in Florence. It was moved to its present location in 1873. In 1910 a replica of the statue was placed in Piazza della Signoria.
