The Republic of Malta is located in the Mediterranean Sea about 80km south of Italy. The country, which is an archipelago of six islands and islets, covers almost 320km2 and has a population of around 450,000. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Valletta is the capital city of Malta.

From pre-historic times Malta has been occupied by various powers. These included the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Spanish, French and British. Malta became part of the British Empire in 1814 under the treaty of Paris and remained under British rule until 1964. It became a Republic on December 13th 1974. Today Malta has an advanced economy and is a member of the European Union. It is a major tourist destination.

21 September-Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a golf competition for men which is played between teams from Europe and the United Sates. The competition, which was first held officially in 1927, takes place on a biennial basis at venues alternating between Europe and the United States. In 2021 the Ryder Cup will be held in the United States on September 24 to 26, at Whistling Straits Golf Course, Haven, Wisconsin. It was held at the K Club in Ireland in 2006.

The Ryder Cup was initially contested between the United States and Great Britain. From 1953 the competition was held between a team from Great Britain and Ireland and a team from the United States. In 1979 the team from Great Britain and Ireland was expanded to include golfers from continental Europe.

The official opening ceremony for the 2006 Ryder Cup was held at the K Club, Straffan, Co Kildare, Ireland in the year 2006 On This Day.

18 September-Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix was a musician singer and songwriter who was a native of Washington, USA. Though he had a short career he became one of the most influential musicians in the history of Rock Music. His innovative guitar playing was a feature of his exciting performances.

Johnny Allen Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington on November 27th 1942. He was of Irish, African American and Cherokee ancestry. He began playing the guitar at the age of 15. By the time he appeared at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 Hendrix was the highest paid performer in the world. ‘The Star Spangled Banner was one of his most memorable performances at Woodstock. He was the headline performer at the Isle of Wight Festival in England in 1970.

Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27 in Kensington, London in the year 1970 On This Day.

18 September-Big Tom

Big Tom was an award winning country singer, musician and songwriter who was a native of Co Monaghan, Ireland. He became famous as the frontman of the showband, Big Tom and The Mainliners. Big Tom’s career spanned over five decades and he was inducted into the Irish Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Big Tom was born Thomas McBride near Castleblayney, Co Monaghan in 1936. Having worked in England for a time he returned to Ireland in 1965. With six other locals he established The Mainliners and began playing in venues around Ireland. He had his first hit with ‘Gentle Mother’ in 1966. It became one of the best-selling records in Ireland of all time. Big Tom had several other successful recordings including ‘Old Log Cabin For Sale’, ‘Broken Marriage Vows’, ‘The Sunset Years Of Life’ and ‘Back To Castleblayney’.

30 September-Richter Scale

Charles Richter was a seismologist who developed the famous Richter Scale. Known as Richter’s magnitude scale, it measures the strength of earthquakes. The scale was first developed by Richter in 1935 in association with Beno Gutenberg.

Charles Francis Richter was born in Overpeck, Ohio on April 26th 1900. He studied physics at Stanford University and was awarded a PhD by the California Institute of Technology in 1928. Richter worked at the Carnegie Institute in Washington where the Richter scale was developed.

In 1937 Richter began teaching at the California Institute of Technology. He was appointed professor of seismology at Caltech in 1952. Apart from developing the Richter scale Richter developed building codes for buildings in areas prone to earthquakes.
